Why Your Financial Progress Might Feel Slow (and Why That’s a Good Sign)

Some seeds take longer to sprout—and the same is true for our money.

A few weeks ago, I planted a backyard garden with all kinds of goodies:
Beets. Beans. Tomatoes. Peas. Pumpkins. Chives. And a whole rainbow of peppers—green, red, purple, yellow, Scotch Bonnet, Fire, Habanero, and Marconi.

The beets, beans, peas, tomatoes, and pumpkins? They’re sprouting like they’ve got something to prove.

But the peppers and chives? Still silent. Not even a hint of green.

The Lesson You Didn’t Know You Needed

If you’ve ever worked toward a goal—financial or otherwise—you’ve probably had this feeling:
“I’m doing everything right…why isn’t it working yet?”

That’s exactly how I felt staring at the soil, waiting for signs of life.

But here’s the truth:

  • Some growth happens underground first.
  • Progress isn’t always visible—but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

What Slow Financial Growth Might Really Mean

If you’re in a season where your finances feel stalled or stuck, take heart. That “invisible” season might be working in your favor.

Some financial wins show up fast:

  • Canceling subscriptions
  • Making a quick budget
  • Cutting back on impulse spending

Other wins take time:

  • Rebuilding credit after a hit
  • Saving small amounts consistently
  • Shifting your money mindset
  • Healing from financial shame or trauma

It’s not that you’re failing, it’s that you’re still rooting. And roots are where the real strength begins. If you know the story of the bamboo plant, you’ll know what I mean. (Check out my LinkedIn post on it here).

What Invisible Progress Is Really Telling You

When nothing seems to be happening, it’s easy to assume the worst. But that quiet phase? That “is anything even working?” feeling?

It’s often where the most meaningful growth is happening.

Here’s what that slower, underground progress is really saying:

  • You’ve already started. You took action! Planting the seed is a win in itself.
  • You’re committed. Every budget tweak, every moment of financial restraint? It counts.
  • You’re building the foundation. The roots come before the results—and they make you stronger for when things do sprout.

So even if you’re not seeing immediate changes, you’re setting the stage for sustainable, lasting transformation. Because when your “pepper moment” finally arrives? You’ll be ready to receive it.
